Why In-App Deserves a Bigger Role in Brand Advertising

Why In-App Deserves a Bigger Role in Brand Advertising

Consumers do not distinguish between web, app, social and CTV. They move between them throughout the day as they discover products, research purchases, shop and seek entertainment.

Consider a typical retail journey. Someone might first encounter a product on social, research it through a publisher’s website, check reviews in an app and complete the purchase on another device. Each interaction contributes to the decision, even though the consumer experiences it as one continuous journey.

Media strategy should reflect that behavior without requiring brands to build a separate campaign for every environment. In app should be considered alongside the open web, social and CTV as part of one connected plan.

Apps Play a Distinct Role in the Customer Journey

People open apps deliberately and return to them frequently. They check the weather, read the news, manage their finances, play games, shop and connect with friends in environments built around habitual behavior.

According to Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile 2026, consumers spent 5.3 trillion hours in apps in 2025 and generated $167 billion in app purchase revenue.

That time creates a meaningful opportunity for brands. Apps can provide access to focused, highly engaged consumers during natural moments within their routines. They can also extend reach beyond browser-based media and strengthen the connection between discovery, consideration and action.

However, adding app inventory to a media plan does not automatically make the plan better. Marketers need a clear framework for determining when it adds value.

Five Questions to Ask Before Adding In App to the Plan

1. Does it add incremental reach?

In app should help a brand reach consumers or moments that its existing media strategy may miss. Marketers should evaluate how app audiences overlap with open web, social and CTV audiences, and whether the channel expands meaningful reach rather than simply adding impressions.

2. Is the supply transparent and appropriate for the brand?

Advertisers should know which apps they are running across, how the inventory is accessed and what controls are available. App-level transparency, clear inclusion and exclusion options, and trusted publisher relationships help brands protect quality while reaching the right audiences.

This matters to buyers. Ninety percent of agency and brand leaders consider full supply path transparency very important or essential when choosing an independent mobile advertising partner, according to an EMARKETER and Datum Intelligence survey.

3. Is the creative designed for the environment?

Creative should account for how people use apps and where advertising appears within the experience. Simply repurposing a standard mobile banner can limit the impact of otherwise valuable inventory.

The strongest experiences use clear branding, thoughtful motion and a layout suited to the screen. Timing matters as well. Ads placed during publisher-defined transition points, such as after reading an article or completing an activity, can feel more natural within the experience.

4. Can frequency be controlled?

Incremental reach loses value when the same person sees an ad too often. Marketers should understand what frequency controls are available within app inventory and how exposure will be managed alongside the rest of the campaign.

Even when cross-channel frequency cannot be managed perfectly, clear reporting can help teams identify excessive exposure and adjust delivery.

5. Can outcomes be measured?

CTR can provide an early indication of engagement, but it should not stand alone. Advertisers should evaluate app against the objectives of the campaign, including attention, brand lift, qualified site activity, conversions and other downstream outcomes.

When possible, open web and in app performance should be reported separately. This gives marketers a clearer view of how each environment contributes and where additional investment may be justified.

Brand Marketers Are Increasing Their Investment

Marketers are already placing greater value on independent in app inventory. The EMARKETER and Datum Intelligence survey found that 69% expect to increase their in app allocations by at least five percentage points over the next year.

Performance can also unlock additional investment. When an overperforming channel receives more budget, 42% of respondents said those funds primarily come from new incremental dollars.

This creates an important opportunity for brand advertisers. In app can contribute to awareness and consideration while also supporting measurable action. The strongest strategies evaluate the channel across the full funnel rather than treating it exclusively as a source of clicks or low-cost impressions.

Performance Should Extend Beyond the Click

Early research demonstrates the broader role app can play. In an independent Upwave study that held the audience, tactic and creative constant, in app delivered approximately 2.4 times greater awareness lift, eight times greater consideration lift and four times greater purchase propensity lift than web.

These results show why marketers should assess the complete experience. Supply quality, creative execution and placement timing all influence whether an impression captures attention and produces a meaningful outcome.

Bringing the Framework Together with Spotlight Everywhere

Kargo built Spotlight Everywhere to connect premium open web and app inventory within one coordinated campaign.

The same Spotlight creative strategy extends across both environments, with executions adapted to the app experience rather than requiring brands to build a separate campaign from the ground up. Ads appear during publisher-defined transitional moments designed to capture attention without disrupting the experience.

Spotlight Everywhere also combines curated supply, audience targeting and transparent reporting through one partner. This allows advertisers to extend their reach into apps while maintaining the creative quality and campaign standards they expect across the premium open web.

In app advertising has existed for years. The opportunity now is to make it a more intentional part of brand strategy.

Brands that evaluate incremental reach, supply quality, creative fit, frequency and measurable outcomes will be better positioned to reach consumers across the full digital journey. Consumers already move fluidly between environments. Their media plans should do the same.
